As students settle into their routines and workloads begin to increase, many families may start considering extra academic support. But finding the right support is about more than choosing someone who knows the subject—it’s about finding someone who knows how to connect with, encourage, and bring out the best in a student.

What Makes a Great Tutor?

Many people think tutoring is simply having someone sit beside a student and help complete homework. While homework support can certainly be part of a session, a great tutor does so much more.

Identifies the Real Reason Behind the Struggle

A low grade does not always mean that a student does not understand the subject. The difficulty may come from gaps in foundational skills, ineffective study habits, poor organization, test anxiety, or a lack of confidence. A great tutor looks beyond the immediate assignment to identify what is truly preventing the student from succeeding.

Teaches Skills That Extend Beyond One Assignment

The goal of tutoring should never be to complete the student’s work for them. A strong tutor teaches students how to approach challenging questions, organize their assignments, prepare for tests, manage their time, and study more effectively. These skills benefit students across multiple subjects and throughout their education.

Explains the Material in a Way the Student Understands

Every student learns differently. An explanation that works well in the classroom may not make sense to every child. A great tutor recognizes this and adjusts the approach—using examples, visuals, practice problems, or step-by-step explanations—until the material becomes clear.

Builds Confidence and Independence

Academic struggles can quickly affect a student’s confidence. A supportive tutor creates a comfortable environment where students can ask questions without feeling embarrassed or rushed. As students begin to understand the material and experience small successes, they become more confident and willing to work independently.

Communicates With Parents

Parents should have a clear understanding of how their child is progressing. A great tutor communicates important improvements, continuing challenges, and areas that may require additional attention. This allows the tutor, student, and parent to work together toward the same goals.

Most Importantly, They Care

One of the first steps in my hiring process is asking every potential tutor to complete a questionnaire. It covers all the important details: the academic subjects they feel 100% confident tutoring, their availability, how many hours they can commit, the languages they speak, and more.

The final question asks why they believe they would make—or already are—a great tutor. Every tutor I hire writes that they genuinely enjoy helping students learn. Many of them say almost the exact same thing: “Seeing that moment when something finally clicks for a student is so rewarding.”

To me, that is what truly makes a great tutor. Knowledge and experience are important, but students can tell when someone genuinely cares about their success.

The proof is in the families who continue working with the same tutor year after year. Those returning families make up approximately 75% of JC Academy, and that is something I am incredibly proud of.
