Preparing for college is a four-year process, and what students do each year of high school truly matters. Below is a simple, year-by-year roadmap to help families stay calm, organized, and on track for strong college options.

Freshman Year – 9th Grade

Build a strong GPA from Day One

Ninth grade sets the academic foundation for all of high school. A student’s GPA is cumulative, meaning it builds each year. Recovering from a weak start is difficult, while maintaining a strong GPA is much easier. When appropriate, students should aim for Honors, AP, and/or Dual Enrollment courses, which can contribute to a weighted GPA and demonstrate academic rigor to colleges.

Get involved early—and stay involved

Colleges value commitment and growth over time. Students should join clubs, organizations, and/or athletic teams in 9th grade and stay involved throughout high school. Long-term involvement shows responsibility, teamwork, and leadership development.

Start community service hours early

Miami-Dade County requires 100 community service hours for high school graduation. Starting in 9th grade reduces stress later and allows students to explore service opportunities that may align with future career interests. Sophomore Year – 10th Grade

Protect and strengthen the GPA

Grades continue to matter—every year counts. Sophomore year is about building consistency and strong academic habits.

Deepen involvement & begin leadership

By now, students should be more actively involved in their clubs and activities. This is the time to begin taking on leadership roles, improving attendance and participation, and showing initiative.

Continue community service with purpose

Students should continue working toward their service hours and begin noticing which types of service they enjoy—this can sometimes point toward future interests or career paths.

Junior Year – 11th Grade

This is the critical testing year (ACT/SAT)

While GPA, activities, and service remain important, 11th grade is the key year for ACT/SAT testing.

We strongly recommend that students begin preparing the summer before junior year with an intensive prep program (yes—we offer one!). During junior year, students should plan to take the ACT/SAT multiple times until they reach their goal score for their target colleges.

Senior Year – 12th Grade

Final ACT/SAT opportunities

If a student started test prep late, the summer before senior year is crucial. This is the last opportunity to prepare for the August, September, and (sometimes) October ACT/SAT test dates. While we strongly encourage beginning test prep before junior year, we are here to support students at any stage.

College applications take center stage

The fall of senior year is focused on college applications, which are time-consuming and detail-oriented. One of the most important pieces is the college application essay.

This essay is often adapted for each school, and a strong essay can truly make a student stand out. We have excellent college essay writing tutors on our team to guide students through brainstorming, drafting, and polishing essays that reflect who they are.

College advising & support

We also offer support with the college application process itself, helping students stay organized, meet deadlines, and submit strong applications.
