Reading

At a certain point, students transition from learning to read to reading to learn. This is such an important shift to remember because reading affects success in every subject.

Summer is an excellent time to strengthen:

  • Reading speed

  • Vocabulary

  • Comprehension

  • Overall confidence with reading

If you feel your child struggles with reading or simply could become a stronger reader, our tutors can help them improve these skills in a supportive and individualized way.

Math

Math is one of the easiest subjects for students to develop gaps in over time, especially when foundational skills are weak.

First and foremost, multiplication and division facts should be fully memorized. Students who constantly have to stop and calculate basic facts often struggle as math becomes more advanced.

The class that creates the biggest long-term impact, however, is Algebra 1.

Students need to truly master the concepts in Algebra 1—not just “get by.” The material learned in this course carries into nearly every math class that follows, including Geometry, Algebra 2, Pre-Calculus, Calculus, and even standardized tests like the ACT and SAT.

Most students take Algebra 1 in 8th grade, and as both an educator and a parent, I cannot emphasize this enough: strive for your child to earn and maintain an “A” in this course. A strong foundation in Algebra 1 sets students up for future math success and builds confidence moving forward.

Essay Writing

Essay writing is a skill students will use throughout high school and college, across nearly every subject.

There are many different types of essays, and students who develop strong writing skills early tend to have a much easier academic experience overall. Writing clearly and confidently helps students express their ideas, perform better on assignments and exams, and succeed in advanced coursework.

Summer is a great opportunity to strengthen writing skills in a low-pressure environment and help students become more comfortable and capable writers.
